page After Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced a Rs 20 lakh crore package for the labourers, farmers, honest taxpayers, MSMEs and cottage industry without going into the exact details, former finance minister P Chidambaram said that Modi gave India a ‘headline and a blank page’ which naturally elicited a ‘blank’ reaction from him.

“Yesterday, PM gave us a headline and a blank page.  Naturally, my reaction was a blank!” Chidambaram tweeted.

He said that all eyes were on the current finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman to chart out a plan of action for the economic package announced by the prime minister in Tuesday’s address. “Today, we look forward to the FM filling the blank page. We will carefully count every ADDITIONAL rupee that the government will actually infuse into the economy,” he added.

Chidambaram pointed out that the focus would be on the ‘poor, hungry and devastated migrant workers’ share of the economic package who have ‘walked hundreds of kilometres to their home states.’

‘We will also carefully examine who gets what? And the first thing we will look for is what the poor, hungry and devastated migrant workers can expect after they have walked hundreds of kilometres to their home states,’ Chidambaram stated. ‘We will also examine what the bottom half of the population (13 crore families) will get in terms of REAL MONEY,’ he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said coronavirus outbreaks has provided an opportunity for India to become self-reliant and announced a Rs 20 lakh crore package for the purpose.

He noted that this package, taken together with earlier announcements by the government during COVID crisis and decisions taken by RBI, is to the tune of Rs 20 lakh crore, which is equivalent to almost 10% of India’s GDP. He said that the package will provide a much-needed boost towards achieving ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.

Modi said the package will also focus on land, labour, liquidity and laws. It will cater to various sections including cottage industry, MSMEs, labourers, middle class, industries, among others. He informed that the details of the contours of the package will be provided by the Finance Minister from tomorrow, in the coming few days.
